MIENTRAS DORMÍAMOS (EL CASO JUÁREZ)

More than three hundred women were murdered in Ciudad Juárez between 1993 and 2000, and a similar number went missing. Mientras dormíamos (el caso Juárez) (While We Were Sleeping (the Juárez Case)) recorded this dramatic event, denouncing the alarming levels violence against women in Ciudad Juárez.

Based on police reports, I used my body as a symbolic map to document and narrate the violence in fifty of the recorded cases. In a morgue setting, the piece consisted of reproducing on my own body, with a surgical pen, each of the blows, cuts, and bullet shots these women suffered. The accumulation of marks transformed my body into a vehicle that represented institutionalized violence against women in Ciudad Juárez.
